Class Is M.I.A When She Cries For Attention

Middle Finger Flies In Hope Of A Bigger Spotlight
by Andrew HaHa

Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam better know as M.I.A cried out for attention on Superbowl Sunday as she flipped off 111.3 million people who were watching the Super Bowl XLVI Halftime Show at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis and around the world on NBC.

The math adds up perfectly if you take the time to think about it. With power houses such as Madonna and Nicki Minaj on stage , M.I.A could have easily been seen as not there, not up to their caliber , the under dog.... or excuse me for saying M.I.A.

Now I totally expected to see Nicki Minaj show off a little bit just based off her affilation with Young Money Entertainment which includes names such as Lil Wayne, Drake, Jae Millz & Gudda Gudda. So to see M.I.A waste a excellent oppurtunity to gain new fans shocked me a little.

Then again with Nicki & Madonna both on the stage , M.I.A had to do something to be noticed. It's not like her musical career could ever match up with the two other ladies she was performing with.

Shall we compare... Apples To Pears?

Madonna
  • won a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for her part in Evita
  • In 2007 she made $120 million dollars with Live Nation
  • More than 300 million records sold worldwide
  • The world's top selling femal recording artist of all time according to the Guinness World Records
on... on.... and on we could go

Nicki Minaj
  • After a month of her debut album Pink Friday being released it peaks at number #1 on the US. Billboard 200 and is certified Platinum.
  • First artist ever to have 7 singles on the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time.
  • Billboards 2011 Rising Star
  • Signed to Young Money Entertainment with Drake & Lil Wayne
and on and on and on we can could go

M.I.A.
  • Kala was certified Gold in 2007.
  • Released her last album Maya on her own label.
  • Known for running her mouth and being more vocal than talented.

The sad thing about the whole performance was that for Madonna to have M.I.A perform with her she had to see something special in her. So where does this leave M.I.A? Possibly with a big fine from the National Football League. Also one less fan at least because even though I admired her for her unique sounds, I lost respect for her musical talents when she her lack of class.

Keeping It Real - Gaining Fans For Life

by Andrew HaHa

If you want your band to reach it's full potential then listen up. In today's economy dropping $10 to get into a hole in the wall music venue to listen to you and several other local bands looks like a crappy investment for people's time and money. So how do you change their view.

Drop The Ego
Connect on a personal level for weeks/months before you start pushing your music on someone. Do you know why a handful of your friends always show up to your shows and the other handful hasn't attended a show ever? I'll put money on it that you knew the ones who always attend for a long time and you've invested in your friendship with them over the years. So why wouldn't you with your fans? Your not a big shot yet and if you ever want  to go farther than playing 100 miles from your home, then you need to start somewhere. Drop the ego make your fans your friends and  keep your friends ... your friends.

Reach Out
You can have the best cd in the world, your shirt can be the bomb diggity and you can put on the best show in the world. However if you don't spend the rest of the time after your performance making a emotional connection and talking to and thanking the people who came out to see you, over 70% of those people won't show up again. It's not enough these days to just show up and play.Reach out and connect.

Give Them Something They Won't Forget
Separate yourself from the crowd. Back in my touring days I sold my cd for $20.00 ... and they paid. This was before I-Tunes, the I-pod and all of the really cool platforms were available. I played with bands that couldn't give away their cd. They would sit at the merchandise table and talk with the few teenage girls that they brought with them to the show and ignored everybody else. Can you say Dicks ?. Go out and mingle with people. Ask them about their lives and stop talking about your music unless they ask. Buy them a beer and ask them for their recommendations on local places to hang out and cool music to listen to. In order for you to get people to stop thinking in $$$ , you need to give them a experience that they will most likely never have again. When was the last time the band you went to see shot a game of pool with you?

Drop The Hype
Talk is cheap. Your not the best band they will ever see. You tell someone that your band is amazing and when you hit that wrong note they will know otherwise. Drop the ego and when you Facebook message someone about your show make it personal
Good Example
Hey Abbey,
My name is Andrew and I'm in a local punk rock band and I would love to see you come out to the show Friday. Bring your camera because I  would love to see your pretty face all over Facebook. Hit me up for details and if you can't make it I understand.

In return Abbey drops you a note that says

Hey Andrew,
I listened to your band it's not my type of music but  I'm going to come with my friends. Your music sounds rough online but I can't wait to see what you sound like live. BTW ... love taking pictures with really cool people. You seem really cool. See you Friday!

Little Hugs, Big Hugs,

Abbey

Because that sound a lot better than saying

Hey Abbey,
Andrew HaHa here from Kick In Those Ugly Eyes and we're going sell out the Amazing Music Dump in Some Town, Some State this Friday. Come on out and take pics of us to put on our Facebook page. See you there and oh if you don't come ... well shame on you.

Because you are bound to get a response similar to this

Um Dick Face, I listened to your music and it sucks. Sincerely ... not a fan of yours ever...

Hope everyone gets the point I"m trying to make.

See you on the flip side and remember to keep it real so people can feel.

The Substance: Three Mistakes You Can Learn From

by Andrew HaHa

The Substance is a band from York, Pennsylvania who will opening up for Bad Fish along with Scotty Don't  and Yellow Dubmarine on Friday January 6th, 2012 at Rams Head Live in Baltimore, Maryland.  Here is a run down on The Substance and things they should change around and use marketing for success.

First of all a google search shows The Substance as #1 on google. The problem is it isn't the band we've been talking about but another band based out of York Beach , Maine. Their website is www.thesubstance.net and they have 100% better seo & internet marketing than The Substance from York, Pennsylvania. Because the band we are talking about doesn't have any seo or internet marketing on their side at the moment.

The Substance who I'll be discussing today can be found by their Facebook Page

Mistake #1
They don't own a domain. While it looks like they may have in the past -the domain they reference on their Facebook page is not valid. It says http://thesubstancemusic.com which won't take anyone anywhere because the hyperlink language is not correct. It should read http://www.thesubstancemusic.com and there is no reason what so ever these days not to own a domain name for your band. Domains are so cheap and the lifeline between you and potential fans. If you don't own a domain then it is basically telling the world that you don't want to invest in your band and nobody else should.

Mistake #2
They make it known that their guitar player / vocalist is their booking agent. Today it is very easy to have a email account for your booking agent. Even if it is you give yourself another name. So let's say The Substance band members are Tim Dougherty,Eric Lighty,
Michael Hammers and Brandon Cassell. Your booking agent should be Tamara Jones and her email should be Tamara at thesubstancemusic.com. When you exchange emails with a music venue they don't know that they are actually talking to Tim. It looks a lot more professional then your personal throw away email address on yahoo : timdoc26 at yahoo.com.

Mistake #3
Using your cell phone as a number for your booking agent. With online programs such as google voice and call central you can easily get a 1-800 number that makes you seem huge. The number rings and go to a voicemail system which get sent directly to your email.
Can you say awesome! This way you can listen to your message and put together a gameplan how you plan to respond. Your phone number like 717- 779-- 7021 should never be used.

Take advantage and learn from the mistakes of The Substance and use these internet marketing tips for the muscians and get a jump on your marketing for success.
